So Many Walnuts!

Judging by the number of walnuts on the ground in our back yard this walnut tree is a very healthy producer.

Today I began the job of picking them up so that they would be out of the yard when Doug and Austin mow this summer. Some of the kids decided they wanted to help and we picked up quite a few.

Then we took them to the other side of the yard . . .

. . . and dumped them in a pile.

According to everything I read online today it has been too late to try to make any good use of this crop of walnuts. They need to be harvested and shelled soon after they ripen or they are have a strong, unpleasant taste. So I guess we will burn them when we burn the sticks and branches that we've been picking up. But this fall I want to shell and freeze some.

In the meantime, we're busy and having fun, carrying them from one side of the yard to the other.
