The Green Beans Are Growing and More - The Walnut Acre Daily Thursday July 9, 2015

WORDS TO LIVE BY

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:9

TODAY'S QUOTE

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. ~ Ambrose Redmoon

YARD AND GARDEN

The green beans are growing like crazy.  I checked them today and they are about twice the size they were Saturday. So it looks like we are going to be picking and canning green beans very soon.

WORKING, LEARNING, AND PLAYING TOGETHER

We had a good day today. It was hot outside so we put down a couple blankets in the shade for the kids to have a place to relax and cool down a little. They liked to look up in the sky and see what shapes they could find in the clouds.

They played band a lot today too.

Michael's stepsister stopped by today with a big teddy bear that he just loves. He calls it Bailey.

I washed and hung out a lot of laundry today and between Amanda and I we got it all folded and put away this evening.

After lunch we worked in workbooks, played a game and read some stories.  I also had read aloud time with the older kids this afternoon.

We also read Ephesians 3

OUT AND ABOUT

Amanda and Michael spent the evening at my sister's. Austin decided to stay home this time.

ANIMAL UPDATES

YARD AND GARDEN

Austin and I worked in the garden this morning, pulling weeds. I also pulled some turnips to use for dinner this evening and discovered they are bigger than I realized. So I'm going to have to get those out of the ground soon. There are two kinds of turnips here - Purple Top White Globe and White Lady.

We found this beetle today and Austin was holding it and letting the kids look at it. It was all fun until the beetle pinched him and then suddenly the beetle went flying. We tried to find it again in the grass but couldn't.

WORKING, LEARNING, AND PLAYING TOGETHER

We've had a lot of fun today. The cars and playmat were used quite a bit.

We played outside this morning before it got too hot. Some of the kids were using the grape arbor as monkey bars. I let them enjoy it for a little but then had to ask them to stop because it was too much for the bars and they were starting shift.

There was more music and singing.

After lunch we worked in workbooks, played a game and read some stories.

Today has been an unusually rough day for Michael. He slept in this morning and seemed fine until lunch time. Then he suddenly went into full meltdown mode over a small thing and spiraled in and out of meltdowns for several hours. This evening has been a little better but not great. I have no idea where this is coming from and hope it ends quickly! This used to be every day life for us but with medication and a lot of work we are usually in a much better place than we were today.

Birthday Party, McCormick's Farm, and More - The Walnut Acre Daily Monday July 6, 2015

WORDS TO LIVE BY

I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.
Jeremiah 31:3

TODAY'S QUOTE

You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. ~ Ralph Waldo

WORKING, LEARNING, AND PLAYING TOGETHER

The kids had another "concert" on the porch this afternoon. Most of Madalynn's portion of the concert was sung to the cat who was trying to take a nap in the chair.

Yesterday we had a birthday party for my two younger brothers. Now they are 13 and 14 - both officially teenagers!

OUT AND ABOUT

Also yesterday we went to McCormick's Farm with my sister and her kids. It's one of our favorite ways to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon. The kids discovered if they put their fingertips in the water the fish would come nibble on them. They also enjoyed climbing on the rocks and watching the duck and geese.

This morning Michael had a dentist appointment. After that we finished up the grocery shopping we didn't get to finish Saturday because the store we wanted to go to was closing early for Independence Day.

YARD AND GARDEN

The garden is so wet from all the rain we've had the last few days that I haven't worked in it much. it's growing like crazy though. Pictured below are pumpkin and squash (I think), onions, potatoes, green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes and tomatilloes.

WORKING, LEARNING, AND PLAYING TOGETHER

Friday was another quiet day. It's gray and rainy and the kids were content to play on their tablets or watch movies. My eyes and head have been hurting so much I really haven't pushed them to do much else. Hopefully we'll get back into a better structure next week.

Today we were busier. Doug bought Michael a new microphone that he could use with the stand Michael bought at Goodwill today. The kids set up a bunch of "musical equipment" and put on a concert. They even put out chairs and a sign by the road in hopes of having someone come listen to them.

Doug was out at the garage most of the day working on various projects. Here was working on a chainsaw. Later today he was working on a vehicle for his cousin.

This evening we're hanging out in our own yard and watching fireworks set off in the neighborhood. We can usually see quite a few from where we are.

OUT AND ABOUT

This afternoon the kids and I ran errands. We went to two pet stores, Michael's Craft Store, Goodwill, Food Lion (twice), McDonalds, and Family Dollar.

James 1:37

YARD AND GARDEN

The last few days I've been working on trying to find the tomato plants in the middle of this weed patch! I'm not done yet but it's coming along. Austin and I put in a few tomato cages but I need a lot more!

WORKING, LEARNING, AND PLAYING TOGETHER

Just a few pictures of the kids playing together. The last few days have been very laid back and calm.

OUT AND ABOUT

We've had three appointments in the last three days. Austin had dentist appointments Tuesday and Wednesday and then this morning Michael had a neurologist appointment. Michael's appointment went well. He's doing good and the only thing we really needed to do were a few minor medication tweaks.  Michael has been going to Bible School in the evenings at my dad's church and really enjoying it. I had choir practice yesterday in the evening. That is my little midweek break.
