Garden Update - This and That

On Wednesdays I usually try to post a garden update, so here is this week's look at what is going on in the garden.

I thought I had killed all my sunflowers but it turns out two survived. I'm so glad because sunflowers were one of the things Amanda most wanted me to plant.

I love the colors on these gourds.

Many of the grapes are ready to be cut. I'm hoping to get that done this evening. There will only be enough for us to eat in the next few days. I'm hoping to get some more vines planted so that I can make grape juice.

We been getting lots and lots of tomatoes but most of them are staying small. This picture is from Monday, I'll probably have almost that many again this evening when I pick them. I think I'm going to try my hand at Dehydrated Tomatoes.

Here is our little harvest of black eyed peas. I have them here to finish drying before I shell them. We only planted one small row this year but next year I'm going to plant more since these did so well.

Thanks to Doug's faithful watering the Impatiens on the front porch are still looking very nice. It's nice to sit on the porch in the late evenings and enjoy the cooler air and pretty flowers.

And that's a bit of what's going in my garden and yard this week.

First Tomatoes

Doug and Aaron brought these tomatoes in from the garden this evening. They're really small but we're happy to finally see some ripen. There are more (and bigger) ones out there that will be ripe soon.

Garden Update - Corn, Tomatoes and Peppers

The weeds are still trying to take over my garden and every day I promise myself that when it cools off in the evening I'm going to go start taking back my vegetables. But every evening for the last week it's either been really hot or we had rain. Today has been a little cooler so maybe this will be the day I make it out there and begin the rescue.

But the plants are doing very well in spite of the neglect.

The corn is growing like crazy.

I thought when I planted the vines (cucumbers, cantaloupe and watermelon) that I was leaving a lot of space between each plant but apparently not enough - I keep finding watermelons in the cantaloupe and cucumber plants. I'm picking cucumbers everyday now, 4-8 at a time. So I've been on the hunt for cucumber recipes. Two I've made recently and we've enjoyed are Marinated Cucumbers and Creamy Cucumber Salad.

The tomato plants are so full of tomatoes that I'm afraid if they don't ripen soon the plants are going to start breaking.

The peppers are getting big as well.

There are four pepper plants and eight tomato plants so I'm looking forward to eating lots of fresh veggies (besides cucumbers) soon.

The Fruit of Our Labor

The really satisfying part of gardening is beginning - seeing the actual fruit (or vegetables) of all the work. Here are some things that are starting to grow in our garden.

Cucumbers

Watermelon

Zucchini

Tomatoes

Peas

This is fun!
