WORDS TO LIVE BY

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. ~ Colossians 3:17

WORKING, LEARNING AND PLAYING TOGETHER

We packed a lunch and went to the park this morning.

When we came home we played in the playroom, rested, played some games and worked on some worksheets.

Monkey in the middle is still a favorite game when we play in the yard.

OTHER

Doug and I finished our Teaching Parent class with People Places this evening. We really enjoyed this class and are looking forward to working with People Places. We still have paperwork to finish up before we can have a child placed with us and we'll be working on that in the next couple weeks. We turned in a large stack of it tonight so we're well on the way to completing that as well.

The Walnut Acre Daily - A Slow Day

Words to Live By

Matthew 6:19-21

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Homeschool and Independent Learning

Besides our reviewing our memory verse and new song we also watched five short videos - Jesus Loves Me:Kid's Song, I Am a Pizza Song, Letter O Song, Counting Down From Twenty Song, and
Counting Firetrucks.  They also completed math worksheets and Lauren colored a purple pizza picture.

Books We Enjoyed Today

The first three books are the books I read with Michael, Lauren, Damien and Christopher and the last book is the one I am reading myself.

In the Kitchen

We took a break from pizza themed food today and had other simple meals instead. I've tried to keep things somewhat bland because Michael's been having tummy issues the last couple days. For breakfast we had toast, bananas, yogurt and juice and for lunch we had chicken salad sandwiches, salad and applesauce. Normally we are at church for dinner on Wednesday evenings but I kept Michael home this evening and cooked us some Ramen noodles for dinner.

Around the House

I cleaned up the kitchen after breakfast and after dinner and also did some laundry.

Austin did the daily cleaning in the living room and playroom and cleaned up the kitchen after lunch. He also washed the living room and playroom windows and cleaned under the furniture in the living room.

Amanda cleaned out the guinea pig cage and did the daily cleaning in the mudroom and downstairs bathroom She also did some laundry.

Outdoor Fun

Austin took the little kids out to play for about a half hour this morning.

We Are Going

Although Michael and I didn't go to church this evening, the rest of the family did. It's was the first Wednesday evening back after the Christmas break and I was looking forward to catching up with everyone but there will be plenty of time for that later.

The ABC Bunny PreK/K Unit

We recently completed a unit study based on The ABC Bunny by Wanda Ga'g. Here are some of the resources we used and activities we did in this unit.

The kids loved this song and were getting pretty good at singing along.

The following three activities came from the ABC Bunny printables section of Homeschool Creations

ABC Bunny Memory

Classification Worksheets
These were my favorite worksheets that we did.

Alphabet Memory

ABC Bunny Game
This game was one of their favorite activities in this unit.

Animal coloring pages from www.coloring.ws

This was a fun unit and Homeschool Creations has many more activities that could be done to go along with this cute book.

The Walnut Acre Daily - First Day of Summer Break

Walking With the King
Everything comes from You and and we have given You only what comes from Your hand. ~ 1 Chronicles 29:14

We Are Learning
This morning we started a unit on forest animals. We watched two videos, did a forest animal addition page, and a squirrel coloring page.

This afternoon CJ, Michael and I read a book together twice, and played two rounds of sight word bingo and a game of sight word memory.

In the Kitchen
Today was Michael's day to help me make lunch. He helped put this cookie dough out on the trays . . .

. . . . and then helped me make these turkey and cheese sandwiches from fish shaped flatbreads.

For dinner this evening CJ fixed hamburgers, fries and lima beans.

In the Garden
Amanda and Austin both worked in the garden this morning, they're still working on the carrot patch but they're making progress. I didn't make it to the garden today.

Other Outdoor Fun
We had our first picnic lunch of the summer.

Thank you, Karen, for bringing us popsicles at lunch time. It made our picnic a little extra special.

Out and About
I took CJ to a doctors appointment first thing this morning.
Austin and Doug went to the Boys Scouts meeting this evening. When they come back I am taking Amanda and Austin to Target and Wal-mart. Apparently they have money burning holes in their pockets that can only be spent in one of those two places.

Walking With the King
Now we ask you brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:12, 13

We Are Learning
We are continuing with the Pretty Bugs theme as we will all week and possibly next week as well. We read our stories, songs and reviewed our memory verse that goes with this theme and then played a Pretty Bugs memory game.

We also worked on our Bb worksheets from here.

We Are Reading
Two of the books the kids chose for me to read to them today are
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss

and Read to Your Bunny by Rosemary Wells.

Homemaking Joys
Once again not much to report here. So far this week I'm barely keeping up with the basics. In fact, this evening Doug cleaned up the playroom for me because I just couldn't seem to get to the end of the work. Thank you, Dear.

And my kitchen still needs help. I should run another load of dishes in the dishwasher. But I'm too tired and it's not going to happen. And it's okay, they'll still be there in the morning.

In the Kitchen
We had pizza bread and fruit for lunch.

For dinner I made baked chicken with cheese sauce

salad with lettuce and radishes from the garden

 boiled radishes with butter

and macaroni and cheese.

The boiled radishes were a new dish for us and both Doug and I really liked them. I had read a suggestion that putting a little lemon juice in the water when I boil them would help them keep their color but I forgot to do it. I simply boiled them with water and a little salt until they were tender. After I drained the water I added some butter and let it melt before I served them. This simple recipe is one I will definitely be making again.

In the Garden
I finally got to work in the garden again today.
I cut some of the lettuce that is growing like crazy.

I also pulled a LOT of radishes and also thinned out two rows of radishes that are coming along.

Now if I can just get to some of the weeds that are growing almost as fast as the lettuce and radishes I'll be glad.

On Our Nature Walk
We continued our bug theme today on our nature walk. Khristian picked up several rocks that had interesting ant nurseries underneath them. We watched them for awhile and then carefully placed the rock back over them so they would be safe. It was interesting to watch the ants scurry to carry the larva somewhere safe as soon as the rock was moved.

We also found a spot we hadn't explored before and had fun finding the little "secret clearing" and "secret doorways" in it.

Other Outdoor Fun
We had a lot of other fun outside today as well.
Like climbing trees . . .

. . . finding caterpillars . . .

. . . and robin's egg shells . . .

. . . and just simply running as hard and fast as possible.

Doug even had the "fun" of changing the oil in all three vehicles this evening after he got home from work. He has recently become an AMSOIL dealer and since the vehicles were due for oil changes he ordered AMSOIL.

Out and About
Since my parents are on vacation this week they asked if I would gather the eggs while they are gone. This morning Amanda and I took the little kids down there and let them watch the chickens and play while I gathered eggs.

Oh, and Amanda told me that she'd better not be in any of these pictures so, like any good mother would, I took one while she yelled at me to stop!

Here are the eggs I gathered today. The six in the top row are duck eggs. We've never had duck eggs before and I'm looking forward to trying them.
