Book Review - Moby Dick or, The Whale by Herman Melville

One of my favorite things to do at the end of a day is to listen to an audioboook via Librivox while playing Mahjong on my tablet. Recently I decided to try listening to Moby Dick. I tried reading this book once but was soon overwhelmed and never finished it. However, listening was much easier than reading and I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed it.

Moby Dick is an unusual book and at times can be a little difficult to follow. The simplest explanation is that it is a book about a man's obsession with harpooning a white whale that was responsible for his loss of a leg. And yet there is so much more to this story. There are sermons and poetry, whale anatomy, whaling history, and the sense that this is an allegory of sorts. Human nature is examined and expounded upon. Somehow, even though there seem to be multiple literary styles in this one work it also manages to have a cohesive feel and tell a story with meaning.

Although there are multiple characters I felt almost a kinship with most of them. From the mishaps and mental breakdown of the little cabin boy, to the philosophizing of the ship carpenter, and even to the consuming need for revenge felt by Captain Ahab, the lives of the characters drew me in and made me care about them as individuals.

So, while this book will definitely exercise the mind, it is enjoyable and worth the time (lots of time) it takes to read or listen too it.

Book Review - The Staff and the Sword Series

The kids and I recently finished this series of books by Patrick W. Carr. This series drew me in and just made me continue to want read more. I was not ready to see this series come to an end!

Book 1 - A Cast of Stones

In this book we meet Errol, the hero and main character of the story. At this point he is a teenage orphan boy who has tried to escape the misery in his life through drinking. He is given a message to take to a priest and he does so in hopes of earning a coin to use to buy more drink. However this errand starts him on the adventure of a lifetime. He finds himself followed by a killer. And the message he delivers sends the priest and his assistant on a journey to the king of the land, a journey that, for some reason unknown to Errol requires him to go along as well. On the way to the kings castle Errol discovers he has talents he never dreamed he possessed and the kingdom needs him in ways he is not sure he welcomes. And the cast of characters is beyond anything he's experienced before - from a nobles to the king, villians to noble watchmen, and wild ferrals and evil malus, there are surprise meetings around every corner. This book had us hooked and looking forward to this second book in the series.

Book 2 - The Hero's Lot

In the second book in this series we really begin to see the plot unfold. It is also in this book that I began to understand some of the spiritual truths the author is weaving through this story. Errol is sent on a journey to find and kill a dangerous and evil church leader. However this journey is also intended as a punishment for Errol for perceived sins and those who send him do not believe he will survive the encounter. However, not only does Errol survive, but he also finds a priceless treasure that will bring truth to his homeland.

It is also in this book that we see a budding romance between Errol and Princess Adora, a romance that seems impossible, yet struggles to survive nonetheless.

And, at the very and of this book we find out that the kingdom is in grave danger, leaving us looking forward to the next book and wondering how Errol will meet this new challenge.

Book 3 - A Draw of Kings

The last book in this series continued to pull us in and keep us wondering what was coming next. Errol truly does not believe that he will live beyond the battle to save his homeland. As the struggle for truth, and the salvation of his people continues, Errol also finds out some truths about himself and his relationship with others and with God that change his life. However, in a world where evil is a very real and visible reality, he must concentrate the need to do his part to defeat that evil, even if it means giving up his life. Princess Adora also struggles with this very real possibility, and the heartache she feels as she works with him for the kingdom. From jungles, to mountains, to villages, this book takes the reader through a breathtaking, sometimes almost heart stopping journey of adventure, love, sacrifice and triumph.

Level Up Your Day -A Book Review

Tuesday I shared a post about my schedule, or daily routine and why it is important to me to have one.  Today I am sharing one of the tools that influenced my schedule and what went on it.

Level Up Your Day by Steve "S.J." Scott and Rebbeca Livermore was a good reminder to me to look closely at all areas of my life and take into account the things that are important for me to be sure to intentionally make time for.

Level Up Your Day shows how daily routines lead to weeks, months and years of productivity. We all have routines, whether we realize it or not. But it's important to make sure our routines are taking us where we want to go and not in the opposite direction.

Level Up Your Day focuses on six important areas of daily roiutine - Energy, Eating, Exercise, Routine Activities, Work, and Fun. There is also a section on how to Maximize Your Daily Routine and Four Sample Daily Routines.

This book is a simple but encouraging read packed with valuable information, resources and common sense. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a not of encouragement and wisdom in creating a personal routine brings maximum results.

Dominion by Scott McElhaney -A Book Review

Since we've been on a science fiction kick here recently I now have another SciFi book to review. This is another book by Scott McElhaney and once again he did not disappoint.

In this book Hawk Meriweather has invented a machine that folds space, radically changing space travel. However his first flight with this new machine does not go as planned. In an effort to survive until rescued he places himself in a cryogenic sleep. The world he awakens to is far away both in space and time he finds it hard to believe his new reality. But he is not given much time to ponder this before he is launched into an effort to save a small group of his kind from utter annihilation.

This book left me wanting more and I hope there will be a sequel.

Beyond the Event Horizon by Scott McElhaney: A Book Review

Beyond the Event Horizon is one of those books that I was truly sorry to see come to an end. It is so rare to find a well written, science fiction book with the story told from a Christian perspective. I read this book with my two teenagers and it was well worth our time.

There are several storylines running through this book but in the end they were tied together very well. Within this book there is time travel, long (14 year) journeys through deep space, a ship piloted by children and teenagers, and a glimpse of the world deserted after Jesus return. There is an endearing and very believable bored and lonely computer program left on this deserted world who proves himself invaluable to the scared and lonely time traveler. And there are colonies built on another planet, true pioneers working to build a new life!

The book caught and held our attention from beginning to end and we are looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Time and Again by Deborah Heal - A Book Review

Nearly every weekday Austin , Amanda and I spend about an hour enjoying reading. Usually I read a chapter from the Bible and then the rest of the time is spent reading a book that we enjoy. One recent book was Time and Again by Deborah Heal.

In this book a young woman named Abby takes a summer volunteer position tutoring a young girl named Meredith. Meredith is struggling with the hurt of her parents divorce and adjusting to a new home in a new town. In the midst of this adjustment her mother is very busy starting a new career as she struggles to support herself and her daughter.

Abby does her best to help Meredith and as they spend time together each day they find themselves caught up in an adventure they never dreamed of that takes them far back in time.

This story is a blend of Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Historical Fiction told from a Christian perspective told in a compelling way that draws the reader in.

We really liked this book and will probably go on to read the rest of the trilogy.

The Human Machine by Arnold Bennett - A Book Review

Recently I finished listening to The Human Machine by Arnold Bennett on Librivox and I really enjoyed it. This book challenges one to gain control of one's own mind instead of allowing circumstances and the mind's own wandering to dictate the course of thought. This book begins with an exercise of the brain involving keeping hold of one train of thought for at least 30 minutres, allowing no other thoughts to intrude. This exercise was also mentioned in another book he wrote called How to Live on 24 Hours a Day. In this book however he writes more on the idea and the benefits of it's mastery. As one learns to control one's my end and the thoughts that are allowed to gain ground there, one can begin to also choose to control one's responses to things that happen to or around one. This in turn allows more stability and even tempered responses too life.

The main point that stood out to me was that I cannot control everything around me this does not mean that everything around me controls me. I can choose how I respond to the raw material life hands me and whether it becomes something that tears me down or something I choose to build with. Character building can happen regardless of everything else.

I found this book to be inspiring and helpful in every day life.

War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells - A Book Review

One of my favorite ways to relax in the evening is to listen to an audio book on  Librivox while playing games that give downloaded on my tablet. I try to give myself 30 minutes or so before I go to bed for this. Librivox had a large selection of books in all categories to listen to and most of them are free.

Last night I finished listening to The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. This book is considered by many to be one of the very first science fiction novels and a sort of template for many of the science fiction novels to come. I am a fan of science fiction and found this story of Martian invasion fascinating. Some of the descriptions in the book are graphic but they serve to give the reader (or listener, as I was) almost a sense of being there. The author does a good job of balancing describing in detail the scenes and also moving the story forward quickly enough to keep the reader engaged. The tripod machines used by the Martians, the descriptions of the Martians themselves and the weapons they used, the varied reactions of the human race, and the somewhat surprising demise of the invading Martians will linger in my mind. I highly recommend this book for any Science Fiction fan.

How Groundhog's Garden Grew tells the story of Little Groundhog and his journey from eating food from other animal's gardens to growing his own food and sharing with the other animals at an amazing feast. His is helped by squirrel who shows him everything from collecting and drying seeds in Autumn to planting and caring for them in the Spring and then the reward of harvesting his own food. The illustrations are bright and engaging and accurately portray the various aspects of gardening, plant growth and vegetable formation from seed to blossom to harvest. There is so much fun learning packed into this book that it would be an excellent addition to any child's library.

Make Me a Legend by Chuck Balsamo - Book Review

Make Me a Legend: For the Dream of a Better Tomorrow by Chuck Balsamo is a book I know I will read again and again throughout my life. I'm actually planning to read it with my two oldest kids as part of our homeschool curriculum this year.

Make Me a Legend is a book that inspires one to reach for highest potential that God has placed within each individual. With chapters like "The Legend Begins", "Get a Dream", "Build an Extravagant Foundation", and "Untame Yourself" this book shares hope with and gives guidance to those who truly want to live a life beyond all boundaries for the glory of God.

Chuck Balsamo is a living example of someone who has successfully put these principles to work in his own life and now wants to share them with others who dream big. He and his wife pastor a vibrant Christian church in Stuarts Draft, Va. Chuck also speaks at conferences and churches bringing hope and encouraging others to live to the fullest their God given potential, and he has a life coaching company as well.

Make Me a Legend will definitely be worth the time you spend reading it and will give you inspiration and courage to step out into a legendary life that truly makes a difference.
