Saturday
We spent part of the day at a car show in Verona. There were several cars and trucks in the show owned by family members from Doug's side of the family. It was nice to spend the day together. And of course Amanda took the dog along and took some pictures of her.

The Walnut Acre Daily -A Picnic Lunch and a Turnip From the Garden

Walking With the King
"Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord." ~ Leviticus 19:18

Today's Quote
Colors are the smiles of nature. ~ Leigh Hunt

On Our Nature Walk
It looks like these berries that I've been watching are blackberries. It looks like it will be just a few more days until we can start picking these.

In the Garden

I pulled this turnip this morning when I was working in the garden. I'm thinking I should have left it there longer, it's not as big as it looked like it would be before I pulled it. The others in the garden are about half to two-thirds this size so it will be a little while before they're ready to harvest.

Other Outdoor Fun
It was absolutely beautiful outside today and we had a picnic lunch.

While we were eating CJ looked up and realized Amanda's cat, Sheena, was sleeping on a branch over our heads.

I'm not sure what CJ and Michael were playing this afternoon but they had the wagon loaded and CJ was trying to figure out a way to pull the bicycle along behind the wagon. Michael was just trying to make sure he got in the picture.

We Are Learning
The weather outside was beautiful and Michael is still extra active so we didn't do circle time or our half hour of school work this afternoon. Instead we spent extra time outside. In a couple days it's supposed to be really hot again and there will be plenty of time then to do these kinds of activities while we're trying to stay cool inside.

We Are Reading
Here are some of the books we enjoyed reading together today.
Hanging Out With Mom

Chaucer's First Winter

The Cat in the Hat Comes Back

In the Kitchen
For breakfast this morning we had this Breakfast Sausage Casserole.
Michael helped me make Sausage Cheese Bread for our picnic lunch.
For dinner this evening I fixed baked chicken, buttered potatoes, Buttery Cooked Carrots,(with carrots from the garden) and we had the whole wheat bread I baked yesterday.

And that's a peek into our day today. Tomorrow afternoon Michael has an appointment with the pediatrician so we can decide what steps we need to take for him since he had a seizure Sunday. Then tomorrow evening Austin has youth group and I have choir practice. We also have more kids than usual tomorrow so it should be an interesting day.

Benefits of Outdoor Play for Kids With ADHD and Mood Disorders

Kids have lots of energy. Kids with ADHD have even more energy. And when you mix in a mood disorder with the ADHD and multiply that by two because there are two kids dealing with the same things, it can really get interesting.

One of my favorite ways to deal with this is to get outside. Get outside and move. A lot. For hours. As often as possible. Spending time outside is simply part of our routine and it is expected. It is non-negotiable. If the weather is nice we are going outside. And when the kids get used to the idea it becomes a welcome part of the day. As you can see from our schedule here we currently have around four hours a day scheduled to be outside. This varies with the seasons of course but as much as possible we try to get out of the house.

Being outside offers a lot of benefits for a child with abundant energy and the need to move a lot and make a lot of noise. There are fewer restrictions to constantly have to be reminded of. There is room to run and jump and throw things and climb things. There is freedom from the constant reminder to "use your inside voice." For a child who is struggling with remembering all the rules while dealing with all the erratic brain signals this can be very freeing.

Many children with ADHD and mood disorders may also benefit from the neurotransmitters and endorphins that are produced in the brain during exercise. The neurotransmitters dopamine, neurepinephrine and seratonin are lower in children with ADHD. These substances can also benefit those with symptoms of mood disorders. So all that running and jumping and throwing and riding has not only the benefit of burning off some energy but also producing some pretty important substances in the brain.

Studies have also shown that some children's ADHD symptoms are milder after playing in green spaces. There is something about being out in nature that seems to quiet the brain and help control the random impulses that are so problematic for children with ADHD.

And all these benefits are free for the taking. Just open the door and head to the backyard or nearest park or playground and have fun!

Outdoor Play Kitchen Rebuilt

Last Spring the kids and I made an outdoor play kitchen for them to play in. They had a wonderful time with it but over the winter it fell into disrepair. So I decided to make another one. I changed the location and used a little different design this time. But the fun is still the same.

Looks like a good salad!

It's amazing how much fun some old blocks and board, empty containers and imagination and creativity can be!
