10 Things About My Husband

For the next five Tuesdays I thought it would be fun to help you get to know my family a little better by sharing ten things about each one of them.

So this week I'm starting with my husband, Doug.

1. He has worked at McKee Foods Corporation as a machinest for the last nineteen years.

2. He is an EMT and volunteers with our local rescue squad.

3. He teaches children's Sunday School and also is involved with the children's ministry on Wednesday night during the school year and teaches Summer Bible School.

4. He is a good mechanic and does nearly all the work on our vehicles and also works on a lot of friends' vehicles as well as small engines.

5. His idea of a good day is to spend it at home, doing work around the house and spending time with the kids.

6. He is calm, steady and reliable.

7. He's fun to cook for because he likes nearly everything.

8. He is seven years older than I am.

9.  He is the oldest of two boys in his family.

10. He recently became active with the Boy Scouts because Austin wanted to join and the Boy Scouts strongly encourage a family member to join with them if possible.

Next Tuesday's 10 Things post will be about my oldest son - Austin.

Musing and Meanderings

Warning!

This will be a meandering post containing a hodge podge of tidbits from my day and whatever other random thoughts happen to wander through my mind in the process.

Here are a couple pictures I took today just because I was amused at the way D. was playing with these cards. She was having a great time.

Today was the first nice warm day in about a week. This afternoon I took the little kids out to play. Amanda came out with us and we walked around the yard looking for signs of Spring. The trees are starting to bud, there are tiny white flowers growing in some places, and some of the little bushes are showing new growth. I always looking for and finding the first signs of Spring each year.

Austin spent most of the day at Grandma's house. He decided he would like to spend the night tonight and come home some time tomorrow. It's nice that he can just walk down and back when he decides he wants to. As long as he checks with me first to make sure he's needed here to help with the kids I think it's wonderful for him. Amanda has the same privilege and does often go down but not as often as Austin.  She's more of a homebody, and she likes to have her free time to do whatever she wants by herself. She's always been that way.

I was looking through the pictures on my phone this evening and discovered that someone besides me has been taking pictures with it. It must have been yesterday evening when we were all sitting around the living room after the little ones went to bed. Two of Amanda's friends were here and I'm sure it was one of them who took these pictures. We all look pitifully preoccupied and grumpy even though we really weren't. It was a pretty good evening. For the most part everyone was just quietly watching tv or doing something on the laptop.

Doug, Amanda and Michael went to Wal-mart to do our weekly shopping and Amanda came back with a Webkinz frog. She now has 37 Webkinz. A friend of mine told Amanda yesterday that she thinks we need to do a Webkinz intervention.

After the last of the daycare kids left this evening we took Amanda and Michael to Dairy Queen. Michael loves to play in the kids play area there, Doug and Amanda were craving ice cream, and I was just glad to get out of the house for a little while.

Michael finally truly got the hang of peddling his bicycle today and was so proud of himself. We are very proud of him too. This is the little boy we were told may not be able to hear or see, and may never be able to walk. He has come so far.

And now I am very tired because even though he has come a long way, he still hasn't mastered the art of sleeping peacefully all night every night. And last night was one of his restless nights. Hopefully tonight will be better because I am exhausted. Plus with time change I will be losing an hour of sleep tonight.

So good night everybody.

Don't forget to set your clocks forward an hour before you go to sleep tonight.

Our Hero - 3.06.11

Here is my second edition of Our Hero, where I spotlight some of the things my husband does for us each week. It is all too easy to take these things for granted and this is one way of making sure I remember how blessed I am.

This has not been the greatest week for Doug but I have to say he's handled it with grace humor.

The biggest problem he's been having to deal with is our septic system. The system was inspected just before we moved in the middle of November but now is having issues. And those kinds of issues are not fun to take care of. But . . . he's taking care of them. And tomorrow we have someone coming out to check things over and tell us where we need to go from here.

Taking the trash to the landfill is a weekly chore for him that he takes care of for us cheerfully.

Doug has a very old victrola that was his grandmother's. Michael was asking questions about it so Doug took the time to show him how it worked and even got it to play a little music. Michael was so thrilled.

He bought and assembled an outdoor cooker and then because we didn't have anything else on hand right then to put in it quickly, he cooked us some hotdogs. I can hardly wait to make some Shrimp Gumbo in it although the kids aren't that enthused about that idea. I think hearing that one of the ingredients is okra turned them off a little.

Oh, a side note here. When I was reading the manual for the cooker one of the first statements I read was this -

Sober adult operation ONLY!

Alrighty then.

And one of my favorite things Doug did last week was to buy us a new bird feeder and put it up. Our old one blew down in all the wind we had the beginning of the week. It was here when we moved in and really old and falling apart anyway. So I'm so happy to have this new one up.

And those are some of the things our hero has been up to lately.

Our Hero

I am very blessed to have a wonderful husband who is also a great daddy.

And since I all to often take for granted the things he does every day to show us how much he loves us I thought I would post a weekly tribute celebrating these things. So here is the first of edition of my new weekly post.

1. Climbing up on the roof on a windy day to secure some loose pieces of tin that were threatening to take flight.

2. Reworking the soil in the garden after little feet have trampled it all down.

3. Pumping up bicycle tires so a little boy can ride his bike.

4. Helping Michael put together a music box kit given to him by a friend.

5. Garage cleaning and organization. We still have a lot of boxes and miscellaneous items sitting in the garage that were stored there when we moved. Bit by bit this pile of "stuff" is being gone through and put away or thrown away.

6. Going to the grocery store after work on a Friday afternoon to get the supplies and then coming home to grill steaks and potatoes for a crowd of sixteen.

Like I said, I am very blessed.
