We're Going On a Bear Hunt Lunch Fun

Our PreK/K activities this week are based on the book We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Micheal Rosen. We've been having fun hearing the story and watching a dramatized telling of it by the author.

I thought it would be fun to have a lunch based on this theme as well. So, after some thought here's what I came up with.

Thin sliced peppers for the grass
Chocolate Pudding for the mud
Sweet Potato fries for tree trunks with cress leaves for tree leaves
Cottage cheese for the snow
Turkey and cheese sandwiches are a cave
Water to drink to represent the river

I put the first one together so Amanda could see what I had in mind and then she did the rest of them.

And, for a table centerpiece, a stuffed bear!

Along with this theme we're talking about fear and overcoming fear. We're learning Isaiah 41:10 as we talk about how God is with us even when we are afraid and that He watches over us.

Do not fear for I am with you, do not be dismayed for I am your God. ~ Isaiah 41:10

We're Going on a Bear Hunt Books and Other Resources

Our PreK/K theme right now is "We're Going On a Bear Hunt." Since we're enjoying this so much I though I would share a few related resources from Amazon.

This is a hardcover anniversary edition of this cute classic.

I love the idea of having the stuffed bear to go with the book. What a cute fun way to add fun to storytime.

This cute pop-up book is also an entertaining way to add some fun to the storytelling. This is a hardcover book with a five star rating.

If your kids like computer games here is a CD-Rom to enjoy. . .

. . . or you can enjoy it on DVD.

And if you would like to expand on the original story here are two more books to continue the fun with.

10 Things About Austin

Today's 10 Things Tuesday post is all about Austin. He's our oldest and is 15. Actually he'll be 16 next month. It's so hard to believe I have a 16 year old who taller than I am. I'm still surprised when he walks by me and I have to look up at him. So here are ten things about Austin.

1. He loves babies and is my #1 helper whenever a new baby comes to our house for daycare. And the babies love him and seem to know they are safe with him. Here he is with Christopher who has been coming here since he was six weeks old. Christopher is the first person Austin says good morning to when he wakes up in the morning and Christopher is always excited to see him.

2. He collects coins. He collects state quarters and also collects other types of coins. Any kind of coin that he thinks may be valuable, unusual or rare goes into his collection and he's learning a lot while collecting. He's learning about the history behind the coins and the places they come from.

3. He enjoys building  with K-Nex and Legos and shows a lot of creativity.

4. He's taller than I am now. I'm still surprised sometimes when he walks past me and I have to look up. It's a strange feeling - at least to me. He's enjoying it.

5. He loves to watch Pawn Star, American Restoration, Myth Busters,  and River Monsters.

6. He just joined Boy Scouts and is enjoying the new friends, challenges and experiences. It's something he's wanted to do for a long time but for one reason or another it hadn't worked out before.

7. He's active in our church youth group and rarely misses an activity, service or other event. He enjoys the discussions, the activities and the people.

8. He really likes bugs and other creepy crawlies. He even grabbed a snake one time that turned out to be a Copperhead. God was protecting him and he didn't get bitten. But we haven't let him forget it and are constantly reminding him not to pick up a snake!

9. He eats All. The. Time! I'll even wake up late at night and hear him rummaging around in the kitchen. I guess he needs it to fuel all that growing that's making him taller than me.

10. He's a wonderful son and I'm very proud of him and thankful that God gave me the privilege of being his mother.

Cress - Container Garden Goodness

Last year this container on my front porch was filled with colorful Impatiens, but this year I decided to try my hand at growing something edible in it instead. Cress seemed like a good option so I had Austin plant some.

It has been very easy to grow. Simply plant and water and let nature do it's work. Cress is a good Spring and Fall crop and prefers light shade during hotter weather. It can also be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill.

So far we've used it only in salads but I'm finding there are a number of other ways to use it as well.

I also checked out the nutritional information on Cress and here is some of what I found. Cress is high in phytonutrients as well as Vitamin C and Vitamin A. In fact, a website called Precise Portions states that it contains more vitamin C than oranges and more Vitamin A than broccoli. And there is a recipe there for Cress Soup that looks interesting.

Here are a few other recipes that I've found that I'd like to experiment with.

Cress Recipes - There are five recipes on this page including Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes and Cress, Peas in Cheese Sauce, and Mediterranean Mixed Salad.

He Takes Delight in His People

Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
~ Psalm 149:1-5

For the Lord taketh pleasure in His people. The NIV says "For the Lord takes delight in His people." This should make us dance with joy and sing His praises. Although this was written to the Jews it applies to us as Christians as well, for we have been adopted into His family, and are His children.

What a blessing!

Just a Note

Just like last vacation (in May) I thought I would continue blogging during the vacation. And just like last vacation, it's just not happening. But I have been doing a lot of writing and have a lot of posts coming up, starting Sunday. I've also been doing a lot of planning as well as prep work for fun activities for the kids. Next week should be fun but until then it looks like it's going to be pretty quiet around here.

Oatmeal Playdough and Nature Fun

Michael has been asking to play with playdough for the last few days but almost everything we had was dried out. The little bit that was still good was not enough for all the kids who were going to want to play too if we got it out. So this morning while they were playing outside I made a batch of playdough.

I usually use the same recipe each time I make playdough because it's such a good, simple recipe. But I decided to do something different today just to give the kids a different experience. Here is what I made today.

Oatmeal Playdough

8 cups oatmeal
7 - 8 cups flour
4 cups water

Measure out 8 cups oatmeal and 4 cups flour into large mixing bowl. Add water and mix well. Add remaining flour gradually until dough is desired stiffness. This gets pretty stiff and you may have to mix it with your hands.

Amanda had the kids help her gather supplies from outside to use with the playdough - small sticks, leaves, walnuts, and some gravel. I picked some flowers to add as well. We also added some plastic animals and trees.

So when the kids came in from playtime this is what they found waiting for them.

It didn't take them long to dig in and start creating.

I loved the things they came up with!
